VICTORY DAY BEING OBSERVED
The nation is celebrating the 47th Victory Day paying homage to the valiant freedom fighters, who made the supreme sacrifice to free the nation from the Pakistani occupational forces.
People are streaming to the National Memorial at Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, and other memorials across the country to pay tribute to the martyrs of 1971, who scarified their lives.
Political parties and socio-cultural organisations have taken elaborative programmes to celebrate the day across the country. The programmes include discussion, seminar, cultural event and placing wreaths at memorials.
The Victory Day, a public holiday, was heralded by pre-day 31-gun salute at the dawn.
President Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, in separate messages, hailed the day and felicitated the nation.
The president and the prime minister placed floral wreaths at the National Memorial to pay tribute to the martyrs in early hours of the day.
They are also expected to attend Victory Day parade at National Parade Square in Dhaka on Saturday morning.
The three services, Border Guard Bangladesh, the police, freedom fighters, Fire Service and Civil Defence, and Ansar and Village Defence Party will take part in the parade.
Important buildings are being illuminated. The green and red national flag was flown atop all buildings to mark the day.
Special prayers will be offered at mosques, temples, churches and other worship places, seeking divine blessings for peace and progress of the country.
Improved diet will be served at orphanages, hospitals and jails across the country.
All children parks and museums will remain open free of cost.
Newspapers brought out special supplements and television channels and radio stations are airing special programmes.
